Start at the Outpost, ride the Elevator into a Deep Layer, salvage furniture and resources, then extract before the crew loses every Vessel. A broken Vessel releases your Living Spark, so you can still follow teammates and look for a new host before your Glow fades.

The core loop

GRAIN ROT is a first-person horror co-op extraction builder. Each expedition begins at the persistent Outpost. Your crew takes a cursed Elevator into procedurally shifting underground ruins called the Deep Layers, scavenges useful objects, and decides when the haul is valuable enough to bring home.

Furniture has more than one purpose. You can break it for resources, move it, use it in the environment, or feed suitable finds into the Grinder for gold. The longer a run continues, the more pressure you accept from the Corrupted and the Rot. Extraction protects what you have collected; a full crew wipe loses the carried loot.

What happens when your Vessel breaks

You are not the wooden body. You are a Living Spark inhabiting a fragile, flammable Vessel. When that Vessel splinters or burns, the Spark escapes and remains in the run for a limited time.

As a Spark, stay close enough for the crew to help and search for another compatible host. Your Glow fades, so recovery is a timed problem rather than a free spectator mode. If every crew member loses a usable Vessel, the expedition fails and the carried haul is lost.

Your first run, step by step

  1. Look around the Outpost. Learn where the Elevator and persistent rooms are before spending resources.
  2. Set one run objective. A modest haul or one room improvement is enough for a first expedition.
  3. Descend together. Procedural layouts mean a remembered route from a video may not match your run.
  4. Scavenge with an exit plan. Furniture can become scrap, gold, cover, or building material; do not carry everything just because it can move.
  5. Watch the crew state. A teammate in Spark form changes the priority from profit to recovery.
  6. Extract while the result is still good. Returning with a smaller haul advances the Outpost; losing everything does not.
  7. Build and verify. Place useful furniture, watch for room progress, and check what the current version actually unlocks.

How to handle the Corrupted

Official material describes the Deep Layers as full of Corrupted vessels that react to sound, movement, and each other in unpredictable ways. That supports observation, environmental control, fighting, and retreat, but it does not prove that every enemy shares one detection radius or one counter.

Listen before entering a room, keep enough space to retreat, and avoid separating the only player able to help a Spark. Traps, furniture, dropkicks, and coordinated attacks all appear in official material. When a situation stops being controllable, leaving is a valid strategy.

What should you unlock first?

There is no official universal upgrade order. Your useful first improvement depends on whether the crew needs survival margin, inventory capacity, equipment access, or a specific room repaired. Treat any exact tier list, scrap cost, or room score copied from a Demo guide as version-sensitive until it is reproduced in the full release.

For the Shop specifically, repair and clean the room, then build and place furniture to increase its room rating. See the Shop upgrade guide for the verified boundary between the official room system and Demo-era observations.

Frequently asked questions

Can you play solo?

Yes. Steam lists both single-player and online co-op. The Spark rescue loop naturally benefits from teammates, but solo is an official mode.

What are the default controls?

Use the Controls / Key Bindings screen in your current build. The official store does not publish a complete keyboard layout, and old Demo videos may not match remapped or patched controls.

When should a beginner extract?

Extract when the current haul would create meaningful Outpost progress and another layer would put that progress at unnecessary risk. There is no fixed room count that is correct for every generated run.
